This small belt bag is handmade, carved and painted with a motif of birds with turned heads, standing against each other on a tree branch. This design is from a composition found on a scabbard chape in Turaida, Latvia. It was a common motif during the Viking Age found in England, through Sweden and all the way to the Rus.
The lid and front are made from vegetable-tanned leather, while the walls are made from a brown-dyed deerskin. The bag is sewn with waxed linen thread, and closes shut using an decorated metal concho.
